From GolfBusters to Slump Busting
We welcome BroV1 to Team Tangent this week and look at how we can use the TANGENT Golf app to bust out of slump. Golf is ahrd.
Welcome BroV1 to Team Tangent!
We’re excited to announce that the creators behind BroV1 and GolfBusters have joined team Tangent.
Jock and Ryan bring all the vibes on their race to scratch. They’ve recently challenged Steph Curry, Garrett Clark, and Max Homa to matches. They built an incredible DIY Golf Simulator and locked themselves in it until they made a hole in one.
They are serious on their race to scratch and TANGENT is just the ticket to get them there. Make sure to give them a follow to see how they will use the app to improve this year:

It’s official, I’m in a slump. Tangent can help.
I gotta be honest, the golf hasn’t been great lately. I think its safe to say that I’m officially in a slump. That’s a weird thing to type. Particularly since I’ve been practicing more than I have in years. I’m hitting over 250 balls a week on the simulator and yet my handicap trend looks like this:

My handicap for the last 9 years.
You can find this plot in TANGENT under Data → Scoring → Handicap Trend. So what is it telling me…
I can’t really call myself a scratch at the moment. I’m playing more like a 2 or 3 handicap. In particularly, the green line (my anticap) is going way up!
What is an anticap? An anticap uses the same formula as your normal handicap except for instead of using your 8 BEST rounds from the last 20… it uses your 8 WORST rounds. If a handicap is a measure of ‘how good is your good’… an anti-cap is measuring ‘how bad is your bad’.
Ideally, you want these two lines to compress, showing consistency from round to round… Mine is not. Anti-cap is taking off like an airplane. So what does that mean and what can I do about it? How do we turn this ship around?
First, it means I’m making bigger mistakes. Penalties, three putts, 2 chips that are just harder to recover from. If you blade a wedge over the green… you’re probably not just losing one shot… you’re probably losing a couple. We can verify this again in the TANGENT app under Data → Scoring → Mistakes.

It’s no surprise that the number of mistakes I’m making per round has been steadily climbing. Thats a combination of poor ball striking, aggressive targets, and lack of mental focus. It’s also the quality of the golf courses this time of year in Texas. Not a lot of grass as you can see here.
The good news is, I am seeing progress in my practice. My ball striking is improving. The strikes on the sim are getting more solid and more frequent. It’s always important to remember that golf is never linear. There are peaks and valleys. Just go back and look at the handicap trend from the last 9 years. Time to be patient and keep working on the right things. We’ll get through this and looking at the data with TANGENT helps accelerate that journey.
Scoring Hack
Lately several users have asked why we don’t have cumulative score more up front in the app. You have to press the hole button on either your watch or phone to see your scorecard and current cumulative score… That was an intentional decision. Many golfers don’t want to think about score as they go. It can be distracting. Knowing you are performing and all-time best… or an all time worst, can change the way you feel about the day, can add nerves, and can distract you from the only thing you can control in this moment… the current shot.
I am debating adding a setting where you could enable making your cumulative score show up on the main playing screen, so let me know if that is something you’d want to see.
However, if you’re one of those golfers that struggle with scoring. That is struggling to break 80 or 90… Every time you get close you fall apart… You should try the 3 hole scoring hack I do in the latest video on The Good Miss.
Essentially, based on your current handicap you set a scoring goal for each 3 holes stretch (1-3, 4-6, 6-9, etc). Then each stretch of 3 holes becomes a match play against that score. You simply try to win more matches than you lose and you’ll end up scoring well.
The beauty of this hack is if you have a blow up hole, you can only lose 1 three hole stretch. It makes it easier to leave the past in the past and the future in the future. Think about this current match. Your scorecard ends up looking like this:
For a scratch player, I recommend setting up your goals like this:
-1 or better for 3 holes is a WIN.
EVEN for 3 holes is a PUSH.
+1 or worse for 3 holes is a LOSS.
For a 5 handicap, you’d basically add 1 to each of those numbers:
EVEN or better for 3 holes is a WIN.
+1 for 3 holes is a PUSH
+2 or worse for 3 holes is a LOSS.
For a 10 handicap, you’d basically add 1 to each of those numbers:
+1 or better for 3 holes is a WIN.
+2 for 3 holes is a PUSH
+3 or worse for 3 holes is a LOSS.
For a 15 handicap, you add 1 again:
+2 or better for 3 holes is a win
+3 for 3 holes is a PUSH
+4 or worse for 3 holes is a LOSS.
For a 20 handicap… add another 1:
+3 or better for 3 holes is a win
+4 for 3 holes is a PUSH
+5 or worse for 3 holes is a LOSS.
Give it a try your next round and let me know if that helps you break through that next scoring milestone.
