The weather is starting to turn for many of us in North America (as I type this it is currently still 80 degrees in DFW) and golf may be harder to come by for the next several months. What do you do in the offseason? Can we get better when we’re not playing?

It’s a question that many of us try to solve. Nobody likes hanging up the sticks for months feeling like there game is degrading with every winter day… and we don’t have to.

There are plenty of ways to improve while you’re stuck indoors. The first way I’m going to work to improve? Strength.

Stronger

I’ve always been an athlete, but I’m not sure anyone is ever classifying me as ‘strong’. I’ve always had a slight build and while I hit it plenty far for my size… I want more…

I’m a big fan of Irish Mike from the Chasing Scratch Podcast and what he has built with Fit For Golf. I get nothing from promoting his app, I just like it.

With options on lifting from home up to a fully stocked gym, the latest update allows you to progress at your own pace. Must get stronger.

Strength —> Speed

But the overall goal is to turn that strength into speed. I’ve used TheStack app in the past with great results adding about 10mph to my max clubhead speed. I went from 101mph to 111mph. I’ve fallen off recently with injuries and lack of attention. I’ve been hovering closer to 105mph. I can’t get where I want to go in the mid-am at those speeds. Luckily, as a Tangent user I can offer you 10% off with TANGENT10 on TheStack. Makes a great Christmas present to yourself. It isn’t cheap, but it works.

I would love to get my cruising speed upwards of 115mph. A long way to go, but I’m willing to work. It starts… during the offseason.

Skills

I’ll enter next season stronger and faster… but I also need to work on SKILLS. For that, I have the Tangent app. We have a ton of built in drills that you can do to improve your game from home.

From the simple straight putt drill where all you need is a putting mat or low carpet, all the way up to our aim and distance control drills that you can do with a net and a launch monitor… we have paths to help you improve from home.

I’ll be specifically focusing on my approach game based on feedback from Tangent’s smart coach. You can use the stats from the Smart Coach to make sure you prioritize the right parts of your game.

I am losing over 4 shots per round to my target of an Elite Amateur due to approach shots!

Tangent tells me that is a combination of distance control and mistakes (hitting into recovery or penalty situations). I know that my strike quality just isn’t good enough. So I’ll be doing distance control, divot, and impact drills this winter until I can confidently hit the green.

Diving even more specifically, I need to work on distances over 150 yards where my performance is the worst according to the Smart Coach. You can find the below chart in your data section with a Pro subscription. It breaks down my strokes gained performance by distance from the hole.

In this case, it’s telling me I am the worst losing between 0.33 and 0.5 shots to a tour pro every time I hit a shot from 150y+!!! That’s a lot of shots from a distance I have fairly often.
