How much are new golf clubs worth?

Every year at the PGA Show brands promise 10 more yards and straighter drives, but how big is the gap between the 'best' in golf and an affordable golf brand? Surprisingly... a lot smaller than I thought.

In partnership with

I developed TANGENT to save you strokes. Well… thats not entirely true. I started developing apps 10 years ago to save me strokes and then decided to share it with you. I wanted to get better at golf and saw advanced analytics and shot tracking as a way to fast track my path to game improvement. And it worked!

But every year at the PGA Show I’m reminded of all the promises of golf club manufacturers.

Get 14 more yards!
More forgiving than ever!
Twist Face!
Carbon Fiber!
Speed Rails!
Turbulators!

It’s a brilliant display of marketing to get you to spend money on new clubs. It’s actually pretty incredible. And it works! I’m a sucker. The only club in my bag that is more than 4 years old is my putter. But just how much better are these new top of the line clubs versus something… a little more affordable?

The reason I ask the question is because I’ve been pitching that spending $120 a year on the TANGENT app will do more for your game than any club you could buy. And I stand by that. 100% you will improve your game more in 2025 with a golf app than you will with a new $700 driver… Drivers are $700 now!

So when I stumbled into Stix at their PGA Show booth, it was interesting. Their clubs caught my eye because they were black with red accents. I’m a little partial to the black and red due to my alma mater of Texas Tech, but they looked really slick. I currently game a special addition Titleist T200 that is blacked out… so right up my alley.

However, I was shocked by the price tag. $999 gets you a 12 club set with a stand bag. Seems too good to be true. I was curious. How close is a $999 set of clubs to what I would consider top of the line? I paid over $4000 for my bag and clubs.

I took a few swings on the indoor driving range and was further intrigued. Felt good. Really good.

After chatting about commonalities of making the game more accessible, affordable, and more fun and we started exploring the idea of pairing a set of Stix with the TANGENT app to see if the AI Caddie could help a player navigate the course with a new set of Stix.

So at the risk of this coming across as a paid for ad (it’s not)… They sent me a set of their Perform clubs.

I put them through their paces and I’m not here to convince you to buy a set of Stix. If you’re a TANGENT user, you probably already have a nice set of golf clubs. What I am here to tell you is the gap between that $700 Titleist and a great driver from Stix is smaller than it’s ever been. And that’s a good thing!

While my pride wants to believe that the money I’ve poured into my bag is money well spent, the fact that a really good set of golf clubs can be had for a fourth of the price is incredible. I would highly recommend the clubs for anyone coming back to the game or looking to simplify the club buying process. You can see my full experience hitting them on a sim with full data here.

Spoiler alert… The driver was legit.

Adding a new bag to TANGENT

It’s easier than ever to manage multiple bags in the TANGENT app. You can quickly tap the ‘+’ button in the clubs screen to add a new bag. Give it a name. Add your first club.

If you’re like me, you can also have multiple bags that overlap. For example, ‘Scotty’ and ‘Default’ are mostly the same, but with different putters. This allows me to quickly switch between the two bags depending on what I’m gaming so that my stats get applied to the correct putter. I’m using this to compare two clubs so I can figure out which one needs to be permanent. So far it’s a close match.

And now it’s even easier to switch between bags at gametime. Just toggle the bag right in your Round Setup. This makes it perfect for experimenting between drivers or managing multiple bags for travel.

I’ll also be using the feature in an upcoming YouTube video when I take the Stix out on the course.

Full confession… I’m a bit of a ball marker snob. I like a good heavy, metal marker. And I’m superstitious about performance. If I’m putting poorly… I’m changing ball markers. Recently we ordered some custom ball markers from Full Metal Markers. It was super simple to place an order, review the mockup, and get fully custom TANGENT ball markers. We’re stoked with how they turned out. If you’re in the market for a custom ball marker, check them out. You won’t be disappointed.
