No pictures on the scorecard... until now
They say there are no pictures on the scorecard, but with TANGENT Golf, there kind of is. Pictures can tell a story of how you scored... or where you struggled. And it's a key tool on your path to improvement. As they also say... a picture is worth a thousand words. Here's a thousand words on scorecards.
How much can you learn from a scorecard?
We’ve heard it a million times, there are no pictures on the scorecard. Typically said right after a miraculous up and down or a long putt that turns an otherwise poor hole into a reasonable score. And while the saying is true for your traditional pencil and paper scorecard… TANGENT Golf turns that scorecard into masterpiece. An easy to digest picture telling the complete story of your round of golf.
Introducing the detailed scorecard in TANGENT Golf.
Every round has a story and the goal of TANGENT’s detailed scorecard is to tell that story as quickly and obviously as possible. Traditional stats fall short of capturing why you played well or poorly… You can miss 14 fairways and still hit 18 greens. You can have 27 putts and still shoot 105. And while greens in regulation is the best traditional statistic for correlating to score… it still falls short of truly capturing what happened on the course.
Here’s where the strokes gained heat map paints a picture. On the right hand side of the above graphic, you’ll find a bunch of colored squares indicating your strokes gained performance. The color of each square is normalized and colored based on your performance in the round. Did you perform well, or poorly for that category on that hole.
The categories remain the same as always:
Driving: All tee shots on par 4s and par 5s
Putting: All shots from the greens
Short Game: All shots not on the green and less than 50 yards
Approach: Everything else
And the colors describe your relative performance:
The detailed scorecard has a heat map of your golf performance where green is good and red is bad. At a glance you can find quick insights, including the key questions I like to ask:
How did I start? Are the first 6 holes green or red?
How did I fight in the middle?
How did I finish? Are the first 6 holes green or red?
Where is the red?
For the above graphic, outside of one bad tee shot… The red is concentrated on Approach and Putting.
Where is the green?
Short game and Driving are mostly green, those were strengths!
It shouldn’t be a surprise, but Dark Red blocks are going to show up in your Coachable Moments in the Round Report and Dark Green blocks are going to show up in your Best Shots in the Round Report.
TANGENT Golf is best with buddies and when you add friends your rounds will get paired, letting the detailed scorecard do the work. Playing a Nassau? Select ‘Stroke Net’ for round type and TANGENT will automatically apply pops so you can use your TANGENT handicaps to have a fair match.
Prefer Match Play? Select Match or Match Net and TANGENT will even highlight who won each hole on the Detailed Scorecard.
In the above graphic, the * represent holes where a player gets pops (a stroke for handicap). You can set the scorecard to show the scores as net or gross (shown as Net above meaning a 4 with a pop is shown as a net 3). The Detailed Scorecard also highlights hole winners in green. Easy at a glance to grab the match performance… I need to win more holes!
So there may not be pictures on a traditional scorecard, but the TANGENT Detailed Scorecard is worth 1,000 words.
Note: Strokes gained heatmap on the detailed scorecard requires a subscription.
Golf Books I Recommend
I get nothing but the joy of helping you play better golf if you buy one of these books. I read them and find them valuable. You might find them valuable too.
Lowest Score WinsIf I recommended one book for the average golfer to dive into, it’d probably be this one. It’s a super easy read despite complex concepts and the idea of ‘separation value’ is such a critical component to understand if you want to improve your game. It covers everything from the basics to key course management concepts with easy to understand visuals. It’s great. |
Every Shot CountsMark Broadie helped pioneer Strokes Gained and changed the golfing world and my life forever. This is more or less the bible for golf data. Fair warning, lots of math and tables, but Broadie explains what made Tiger the greatest statistical golfer to ever play the game and how you can use Strokes Gained to focus on your game…. and it’s not putting for dough. |
The Four Foundations of GolfI’m a big fan of Jon Sherman and his approachable way of explaining how to play better golf without focusing on golf swing. From the mental side, to course management, to just understanding how to score… This book is great. I relate quite a bit to Jon’s journey and can tell you that his concepts will lead you to better golf much faster than chasing swing mechanics. |
The Practice ManualFull disclosure, Adam is an advisor for TANGENT, but part of why we asked him to join us is for his fantastic view on game improvement. Adam has a very scientific mind and I find his approach to differential practice and ways to train yourself with feedback refreshing for my engineering mind. This book covers everything from practice routines to ball flight laws which are critical to diagnose what is happening on the course. |
This scorecard doesn’t have a picture… but it does have video
I do my best to learn from every round and on my journey to play in the US Mid Am I’ve got to get better. I recently played a round at a difficult course in Texas Star. In this video, I detail 18 lessons and easy tips from my round to improve upon..
